Will the AFL split the comp or have a final 10 format in 2012?

The AFL is going to have to make a decision on this one over the next 3 months i reckon. on the back of the news that it is going to have to financially back both SA clubs over the next 3 years. because there is a possibility that neither team will play finals. while they go through a rebuilding stage at both of these clubs.

So its going to come down to this. will we get a split comp or will we see a final 10. either way this change is going to have to happen. so there is more prize money $ $ $ being more accessible to lower & middle of the road teams each season. in stead of the AFL having to prop teams up financially so often.

Which way do you see the AFL going?

It’s solely a money thing. Even the top 8 is a bit overboard. I’m not saying go back to a final four but with a top 8, some teams have lost more than they have won. All its doing is rewarding mediocrity and having a ten team finals programme would be even worse. Six is still the ideal number, but the AFL (like the opther codes) will bow to the TV dollar.

Geez, I hope not, that’s another few rounds of footy where your side might not be playing…and let’s face it that could be a bit of a lottery the way games go sometimes. Definitely in favour of the big clubs, who might be resting while the other clubs fight out the early finals games.

Don’t have enough info on it..split comp? surely that’s going to favour the big clubs..and perhaps force clubs out of existence.

Well ok ,they snuck the Suns in, thank God they won 2, but who knows when they might win another one..then GWS…a huge gamble on the fan support and a gamble on the competetivesness. I am concerned about that.

I’m sure the final 8 will be retained, but i always feel for the teams who miss the finals. Remembering back to the old VFL days, the 8 teams who missed the final 4 played in a knock out “night comp”, at South Melbourne’s lake oval. Cant imagine a night comp happening again these days, however a knock out comp, played as a “curtain raiser” before elimination finals, if viable or inventable, could be interesting ? These games would no doubt help swell ticket sales, with supporters having a last chance to see their teams in action, while also gaining a sniff of the finals atmosphere, at this business end of the year ! Imagine the experience and atmosphere for the young Suns team, playing their final quarter in one of these knockout finals,in front of a packed MCG, before a Geelong – Collingwood semi final game !
