What do others consider to be the best spywre anti virus free protection to be?

I have the free version of Malaware antispy/virus protection. Since my computer started to freeze and run slow, the past month or so I ran Malaware which found nothing. I run the malaware most days. but still pages load slow, computer freezes and I am continually restarting my computer. Malaware is the protection that my service provider use and gave me (BigPond Telstra)
Malaware has not found any viruses or spyware since, well I dont know when, months and months so am wandering if Malaware is actually finding anything or do I need to download another type of protection.
I tried the free version of AVG but I think it clashd with Malaware as my computer ean slower thaan usual and froze. Also it found nothing. I also downloaded the free version of Dr something antivirus scanner but ran even worse and finding nothing..
So can anyone help with this problem.
I am sure that I have viuses or something but nothing seems to be finding it so thought a different spyware anti virus protection may be the answer.
Surely after months and months I would have picked up some viruses????
Help plz
PS: I know this is a dumb question asked a million times before but I just had to ask anyways as Ive tried several free versions of protection and Im still none the wiser. An experts opinion would be nice.
I have vista wireless by the way.

    Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

The one I’m using right now is really good, though, it’s not free. ESET Smart Security (could also just try the free trial, ESET NOD32 Antivirus):
    http://www.eset.com/smartsecurity/

EDIT: The reason why your computer may be slowing down is because you don’t have enough memory (RAM) to run so much programs (processes) simultaneously.

    EDIT2: I’m also on Bigpond Telstra. $ 150AUD a month -_-

The best available free antivirus is Avira coz’ I’ve experienced it. If you can afford, buy Kaspersky for all-around protection.

I have used Zone Alarm Firewall, I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just changed to Avast antivirus and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

well superantispyware and malwarebytes free version are great but they have no real time protection, only the paid versions do, for a good free program use spyware terminator, it is really reliable, if you can afford it get superanti’s paid version, it is an awesome app.

Seems like no one is suggesting to you to clean out your machine. Get Ccleaner and clean out all the old unused temp files and cookies. Clean out your registry of old unused keys. That in it’s self will help speed up your machine. You say you have Vista. Are you getting updates from Microsoft? If your not getting updates from the Microsoft update site that could also be your problem.

Right now there are a huge amount of people using Vista that are not getting updates. There not getting them because of a glitch in the Vista running system. Windows 7 is suppose to be out by Oct 25 i think. By the end of the year Vista will no longer be supported by Microsoft. Your gonna have to upgrade your running system before long anyway.

Try running a on line scan. Try the Kaspersky on line scanner. There is none no better, See if it comes up with anything. Turn off your AV before running the online scanner. Turn off any programs your not using. Run the scanner. It will not remove anything but it will let you know what’s there if anything.

I assume you mean the program Mal-Aware that is designed to remove a SmitFraud infection.
This program does not install itself into windows so it will not appear in add/remove programs. There are a couple of alternatives:
    1. Go to Start => run. Type in msconfig and click enter. Go to the startup tab and see if you can find an entry for Mal-Aware. If it exists, just untick it.
    2. Do a search for ‘malaware’ on your hard drive. The file name should be something like malaware1-002.exe. Delete it.

Go to an online virus checker, such as Kaspersky, Mcafee, or Norton to check if you have any viruses.
Pay for a reputable antivirus. My preference is Kaspersky, but any of the top 10 or 12 antivirus programs will do the job.

    My suggestion:
If you suspect it is because of a Trojan (virus), then you may follow the steps to fix the problem.

1>>> Boot the PC in Safemode with networking.
keep tapping F8 while booting the PC to select Safemode withnetworking from advanced boot options.
    2>>>Visit http://support.microsoft.com/ea
    select FULL SERVICE SCAN
Note: since it is in safemode with networking, you may be able to go online to run the full scan which will take more than an hour.
This will find the virus and repair the corrupted files from your PC.

IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE BOOTING IN ‘SAFEMODE WITH NETWORKING’ or the same issue with “booting in Safemode” you need to contact http://help.live.com (a 24/7 free online support by Microsoft to remove virus from your PC)
